Suits
|
I'm looking to purchase a new single breasted suit for my first job in an office.
Are black suits acceptable or are they more for formal occasions such as weddings and funerals?
Two-piece or three?
What sort of lapel should I be looking for?

You need to make an impression to move up the ladder, rocking up in a grey suit won't get you noticed.
This will.

Navy or dark grey, plain or thin pin stripes, 2 button. Make sure the trousers actually cover your ankles. Thinnish lapel, standard notch. BLACK SHOES, white shirt and not a ridiculous tie.
Can't really go wrong with that IMO

Dark blue whistle works.
Make sure belt and shoes are the same colour. Never mix stripes with shirt and tie. In fact stay clear of striped anything.
M&S do a decent cheap one of money is a problem. If not Suit Supply the next level up.

Make sure the trousers actually cover your ankles. Could be confusing to said poster, no Pedal Pushers and or Jesus. Creepers would be more apt, for someone not used to wearing a whistle.

And don't forget you'll be needing a new Peckham.

Does navy/dark blue go with black shoes?
I've already got a dark grey suit.

Too dark doesn't work, unless the interview is at the undertakers.

Slim fit, should be fine if you are relatively slim. Difficult to tell cut, or fabric online until you try on, but you have 7 days to return so best try and see.

Never, ever wear brown / tan shoes with a blue, black or grey suit if you want to be taken seriously.

Re: Suits

brown/tan shoes with dark suits it all the rage in The Netherlands. Looks shit to me.
Personally I've only owned 1 pair of non-black shoes and that was my Desert Boots in my mod days of '79.

Never black. Unless you are a bouncer or attending a funeral. Most suit stores will hardly stock any black suits.
Navy or Grey (light Grey in summer months) are the norm, with black shoes. Dark brown shoes are fine with navy suits but traditional brown/tan shoes are only worn on fridays and the shoe colour should always be darker than the suit.
